Role(s) Filled: VP of Service Operations
Timeline: 2 months
The Challenge
The Miner Corporation’s only operations leader was drowning in work. She found herself handling operations tasks solo. She spent significant time traveling to visit their teams across the entire country. It became clear that relying on one person to handle all the role’s responsibilities wasn’t sustainable.
They decided on their plan of attack: hiring two regional VPs of Operations to cover the Midwest and Western US. The second part of their attack strategy: bringing us in to support the search.
We started working with them years prior with a few miscellaneous placements. Eventually, we supported their searches for regional sales managers and higher-level management positions. We were especially helpful on more complex searches with unique role requirements.
In this case, they knew the hard skills and relevant experience were important. But as a pretty lean company, their team feels the impact of each hire more than many other organizations. One of the biggest predictors of success at The Miner Corp would be how well a hire fit their company culture.
The Strategy
We had a few guardrails to work with. They needed someone willing to travel often, filtering out many candidates. Ideally, they’d also have experience working with a private equity firm like The Miner Corp’s owners. Lastly, they wanted someone with direct and indirect reports across a region already.
We presented them with two slates of candidates. The first slate included four highly qualified individuals. They met all the hiring team’s technical requirements, but three of the four fell short in culture. The second slate had four more candidates, two of whom they liked. They wound up hiring one of the candidates from the second group.
The Solution
The candidate they chose checked every single one of their boxes. He came from a similar service-type commercial industry. He had ample leadership experience with a geographically wide-spread team. He clearly possessed the team-oriented personality they wanted in a service operations leader.
From his side, he’d been looking for a company where he could see greater future career growth. This opportunity definitely fit the bill. As a bonus for everyone, the candidate was located conveniently near them, no relocating necessary. In the end, everyone was happy with the compensation and contract they agreed to.
The Outcome
This is a fresher hire, so their new employee hasn’t been fully tested in their new role yet. But having both operations roles filled is expected to boost the company’s overall capacity for new and existing business. That means opportunities for future hires and greater company growth.
We’ve supported The Miner Corp on ~two searches per year, and we continue to happily support their higher talent demand as they continue expanding.
